The University of Bonn and the United Nations University Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS) are delighted to announce that thanks to support from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) they will be offering a number fully funded scholarships to students from developing countries for the Joint of Science (M.Sc.) program “Geography of Environmental Risks and Human Security.” UNU-EHS Scholarships was launched in Germany, in October 2013.

About UNU-EHS Scholarships in Germany: startingfrom 2017, the Joint Master’s Program is part of a certain group of international postgraduate program that profits from the EPOS finance scheme presented by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
The joint M.Sc. program offers postgraduate scholars with comprehensive knowledge, critical understanding, tactics and the tools essential to take an interdisciplinary approach towards environmental risks and human security. It is the third study platform in Bonn to be admitted to the DAAD finance scheme, furthermore to the ZEF Doctoral Studies program and the ARTS study program presented by the Agriculture Faculty, University of Bonn.
This program is the result of the productive teamwork between the University Of Bonn Department Of Geography and the United Nations University. It is a significant input to the internationalization of the University of Bonn and is reinforced by the German agency, DAAD.
Arrears of expertise include Vulnerability Assessment, Ecosystem Services, Sustainable Development, Disaster Management, Climate Change Adaptation, Human-Nature Relationships, Science & Technology Studies, Development Geography, Geomorphology, Socio-Hydrology, Future Studies, GIS and Remote Sensing.
The program (UNU-EHS Scholarships in Germany) entails of 12 modules, of which ten are taught in the first three semesters followed by a compulsory internship and the independent work on the Master’s thesis. An internship of a minimum of two months is an obligatory part of the program.
Since its launch in October 2013, a total of 166 students from 42 different countries have been studying within the program.
UNU-EHS Scholarships in Germany’s primary goals are:
- Theoretical and methodological skill in the area of environmental risks and human security joined with applied experiences
- Solid concentration on developing nations/ the “Global South”
- Intercultural and interdisciplinary learning environment
- Likelihood to participate in ongoing research projects at both institutions
- Close collaboration with the UN system & international organizations

Eligibility for UNU-EHS Scholarships in Germany
Qualified applicants should fulfill the following prerequisite in addition to the general eligibility criteria for the Master’s program:
- Being an applicant from a “Developing Nation” (based on the classification of the DAAD)
- Holding a minimum of two years of practical work experience (e.g. with an Non-Governmental Organization, Governmental Organization, or the private sector) in a field related to the study program
- Should have graduated from the Bachelor no beyond five years ago
- Should have finished no other Master in a related field of studies
- Targeting at a career as a practitioner in a field associated to the program of study

Successful candidates will be financed to fund all costs directly connected to the study program and their cost of living in Bonn.

How to Apply for UNU-EHS Scholarships in Germany
- Scholars desiring to be selected for these scholarships need to apply for the program as well by filling the applications forms for the DAAD; acceptance to the former does not assure acceptance to the latter.
- The selection procedure for the EPOS finance among shortlisted applicants will occur between February and April every year.
- Applicants that do not meet the EPOS prerequisite but wish to profit from monetary support during their studies are summoned to apply independently and early to other available funding program in Germany.
