Helmut Veith Stipend for Female Masters Students is currently open. The Wolfgang Pauli and TU Wien Institute in Austria is providing the Helmut Veith Stipend for Female Master´s Students in 2020/21 academic session. The Helmut Veith Stipend is granted yearly to exceptional female students in the discipline of computer science who pursue (or intend to pursue) one of the master’s programs in Computer Science at TU Wien administered in English.
The Helmut Veith Stipend is dedicated to the memory of an outstanding computer scientist who worked in the fields of logic in computer science, computer-aided verification, software engineering, and computer security. Helmut Veith, who heartbreakingly died in March 2016, was a strong supporter and mentor for women in computer science.
In honour of Helmut Veith’s endeavours, a stipend for exceptional female students in computer science was created with the support of TU Wien, the Wolfgang Pauli Institute, and kind donations of friends and associates of Prof. Veith.
Benefits of Helmut Veith Stipend for Female Masters Students
Students who are awarded a scholarship receive EUR 6000 annually (paid in instalments), and tuition fees are waived.
Eligibility for Helmut Veith Stipend for Female Masters Students
- Applicants must be eligible for admission to a master’s program in Computer Science taught in English at TU Wien (currently Logic & Computation and Business Informatics; European Master´s Program Computational Logic for the duration of the recipient’s studies at TU Wien, Computer Engineering (Technische Informatik), Media and Human-Centered Computing, and Data Science).
- While applications for funding can be submitted prior to or in parallel with the admissions process, the funding will only be granted to candidates who have been unconditionally granted admission to the master’s program.
- An application for funding is not a substitute for the admissions process; neither does a provisional offer of funding entitle the candidate to study at TU Wien.
Female students who satisfy the following criteria are qualified to apply for the stipend:
- First degree in Computer Science or Mathematics (Bologna first cycle) or related degree
- Extensive knowledge and interest in (at least one of) Helmut Veith’s areas of research:
- Logic in Computer Science
- Formal Methods and Verification
- Foundations of Artificial Intelligence
- Complexity Theory
- Computer Security
- Proficiency in English
- Beneficiaries of funding have to be devoted to demonstrate good progress during their education, i.e.:
- get a minimum of 25 ECTS credits from the respective master’s curriculum each term on average since the start of their master’s education, and
- attain a grade average of at most 1.5.
- Beneficiaries of funding have to live in Austria during term time for the period of their studies. Exceptions and temporary breaks of the stay during term time (e.g., for internships or research appointments) are subject to authorization.
- The stipend is provided for the duration of the master’s program (subject to the conditions listed above), for up to 2 years.
How to Apply for Helmut Veith Stipend for Female Masters Students
Students are required to submit the following documents for Helmut Veith Stipend for Female Masters Students:
- Cover Letter, explaining the type of funding the candidate is applying for, and all other areas the candidate deems significant for the application
- Curriculum Vitae
- Motivation Letter, explaining the reasons why the candidates wants to enroll in the program Logic and Computation, why funding is required, and with which groups of the faculty the candidate would be willing to work with during their master’s thesis and why.
- Reports on university examinations (transcripts)
- Qualifications and/or certificates (bachelor degree, first degree, or higher). If the final academic certificate is not yet obtainable at the time of the application closing date, a preliminary certificate (stating the type of degree and the anticipated graduation date) signed and stamped by the degree-awarding university has to be provided.
- Contact details of two referees (for letters of recommendation)
- English language certificate (TOEFL or similar)
- Copy of passport
