The Getty foundation in the USA is accepting applications for the scholar grants in 2021. Getty Foundation Scholar Grants are for established scholars, or writers who have attained distinction in their fields. Beneficiaries are in residence at the Getty Research Institute or Getty Villa, where they embark on their own projects free from academic responsibilities, make use of Getty collections, link up their colleagues in a weekly meeting dedicated to an annual research theme, and take part in the intellectual life of the Getty.
Benefits of Getty Foundation Scholar Grants
Recipients of Getty Foundation Scholar Grants may be in residence from three to nine months:
- Three-month residency: September to December, January to April, April to June: $21,500
- Six-month residency: September to April, January to June: $43,000
- Nine-month residency: September to June: $65,000
- The grant also comprises an office at the Getty Research Institute or the Getty Villa, a residence in the Getty scholar apartment complex, airfare to and from Los Angeles, and accessible healthcare option. These terms are valid as of June 2019 and are liable to future adjustments.
Eligibility for Getty Foundation Scholar Grants
- Applications are welcome from researchers of all nationalities who are working in the arts, humanities, or social sciences.
- Applicants who received their degree after September 1, 2016, should apply for a postdoctoral fellowship.
- Current Getty staff and members of their immediate family are not eligible for Scholar Grants. Recent beneficiaries who have obtained a Getty Scholar award within the past three years may be taken out from consideration.

Candidates are informed of the Getty Research Institute’s decision around six months following the closing date.
Review Process
Getty Foundation Scholar Grants are conferred in a competitive manner. Applications are assesses based on the following: (1) the general quality of the application; (2) how the planned project bears upon the yearly research theme*; (3) the candidate’s past accomplishments; and (4) how the project would gain from the resources at the Getty, including its library and compilations.
*Candidates for the AAAHI Fellowship are not expected to work on the annual theme, but instead should explain their focus on African American art and cultural history.
How to Apply for Getty Foundation Scholar Grants
Candidates must fill out and submit the online Getty Foundation Scholar Grants application form, together with the attachments listed below, by the closing date.
- Project Proposal: Every application should have a description of the candidate’s proposed plan for study and research (not to go beyond five pages, typed and double-spaced). The narrative should specify (1) how the project relates to the scholar year theme and (2) how the project would be furthered by the resources at the Getty, including its library and collections.

- Create or update your account and password, log in, and begin a new application.
- You may return to your work at any time by visiting the portal at the link above and logging into your account.
- Please note: Once you have created and saved an application form, be sure to return to work on the same form by selecting the “Applications: In Progress” link to return to your saved application. Otherwise, you may inadvertently create multiple versions of the same application.
