DLR-DAAD Research Fellowships’is a scheme created by German Aerospace Center (DLR) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

About the DLR-DAAD Research Fellowships Award: DLR is Germany´s national research center for aeronautics and space. Its deep research and development project in Space, Aeronautics, Transportation and Energy is put into national and international cooperative ventures. As Germany´s space agency, DLR has been given the responsibility for the progressive planning and the enforcing of the German space program by the German government and for the foreign representation of German interests. Approximately 8,300 people plus approx. 400 visiting professional scientists are hired in DLR´s 40 organizations and facilities at twenty (20) locations in Germany.
Eligible Field/Fields: This exceptional scheme is envisioned for highly-qualified international doctoral and postdoctoral scholars and senior scientists from the areas of Aeronautics, Space, Transportation, and Energy. DLR-DAAD Fellowships program render exceptional scientists and academic researchers the chance to conduct special research at the Institutes of the DLR in Germany.
Please note that within the DLR-DAAD Research Fellowships program, you cannot apply for a university or another institution, only for a DLR institute.

Eligibility for DLR-DAAD Research Fellowships
At the period of their application, candidates for a DLR-DAAD Fellowship should
- not be of German nationality,
- be able to demonstrate their remarkable project or research accomplishment in the field of research corresponding to the fellowship program offer,
- Type A: have accomplished their academic studies or research with a university degree not beyond six (6) years ago,
Type B: have accomplished their academic studies with a doctorate/PhD/Candidate (Russia) not beyond two years ago,
Type C: candidates should be working in higher academic education or at a research institute; positions are available to remarkable and qualified academics and scientists who should generally possess a doctorate/Ph.D., additional prerequisites may differ which are mentioned in the fellowship offers, - have an excellent knowledge of English; knowledge of German is advantageous.
Application
The application process takes place online through the DAAD portal.
Type A & B:
The following documents have to be uploaded to the DAAD portal:
- Online application form;
- Cover page;
- Statement of the reasons for applying for a certain fellowship: Appendix;
- Complete curriculum vitae;
- List of publications, if applicable;
- Abstract of the concluding Master (MSc) or PhD thesis (max. 3 pages);
- An Institution of higher education degree certificate showing concluding grade(s): the certificate should be subsequently submitted before the grant-supported research begins if it is not available during the time of application;
- English language certificate (e.g. TOEFL IBT: min. 79; IELTS: min. 6.5);
- English or German translation of papers submitted in the national language;
- Every university certificates on all yearly examinations with individual grade(s), incl. explanation of grading system.
DLR-DAAD Research Fellowshipsapplicants are not required to submit any confirmation of academic supervision.
Documents and requirements to be forwarded to the DAAD application address by post:
Two (2) recommendation letters, which must be written by senior academics of the candidate´s own choice. The form of the recommendation letter must to be generated in the DAAD portal in the section “Request reference” after registration and downloaded. Please, send the form by e-mail to your referees and request for the completed reference form to be forwarded to the application address in Bonn in a locked envelope. References are confidential and must not be read by the applicant.
Recommendation letters cannot be received in digital form and should be forwarded by your referees by regular mail to the DAAD head office in Bonn. Recommendation letters must arrive 4 weeks after the application was uploaded in the DAAD portal at the latest, at the address:

DLR-DAAD Research Fellowships application deadline
If a deadline for application exists, it is stated in the current offers. The DLR-DAAD scholarships are awarded with the standard “first come first serve”, consequently fellowship offers may sometimes be given to other applicants while your application is still processed.
