Decolonial Futures Program and Winter School for South African Students participants in Amsterdam and Soweto will give shape to and reflect on a photographic archive initiated by Funda’s participants, also known as Amaciko Imaginerium. At the conclusion of the Decolonial Futures Program and Winter Schoolclasses the archive will be presented both online and at Framer Framed.

For this project partakers in Amsterdam will acquaint themselves with Funda’s socio-cultural background which is inseparable from the rich history of Soweto and South Africa at large. Partakers will learn about present initiatives embarked on in arts and creative fields that are decolonial in essence and intent. They will articulate their abilities, tools and practices from the same root, with an importance on mutual thinking and making

The six classes in Term 1, ran by Ibrahim Cissé, occur on Tuesday evenings from 18.00h – 21.00h at Framer Framed from 20th October – 1st December with a little break between the 3rd and 17th November.

The project for the second term in addition to the open call for the Winter School will be declared this autumn. The Winter School will be comprised of a series of workshops of which DF partakers are also invited to apply. The WS will end with a public program, accessible to a broader audience. Partakers will have a chance to present their accomplishment to the public.

If safety regulations connecting to the present pandemic will permit, the exchange will culminate in a week-long Winter School program in June occasioning the presence of 7 South African artists in Amsterdam.

About the Decolonial Futures Program and Winter School for South African.

Decolonial Futures is an exchange program planned between the Sandberg Instituut, the Rietveld Academie and Framer Framed in Amsterdam and Funda Community College in Soweto, South Africa. The program was stirred by the aspiration to work jointly headed for a decolonial future in which an equal exchange of understanding and viewpoints from students working across the disciplines of art and design could be established. Each term partakers will work together in a particular project informed by some of the present efforts embark on by counter-hegemonic movements and initiatives around the globe, departing from the partakers’ lived experiences.

Type: Training

Eligibility for Decolonial Futures Program and Winter School for South African Students

  • Scholars from the Rietveld and Sandberg along with cultural practitioners from outside the art academy are competent to apply.
  • You are conversant with Colonial/Decolonial pasts, engagements and manifestations.
  • Your practice rests within inventive and arty fields.
  • You do not have to have a photographic background, but notions will be helpful.
