Good news! Carnegie Developing Emerging Academic Leaders Fellowship Program is presently open. Carnegie Developing Emerging Academic Leaders Fellowship Program aims to nurture upcoming career researchers in accredited research groupings at the University of Cape Town to support their development as the next generation of African researcher leaders. 

Application Deadline: 22nd December 2020

The fellowship is intended at empowering a recently graduated PhD researcher to develop their own independent research within one of ACDI priority thematic fields, under the direction of senior academic and research staff in the ACDI network. 

Eligible Field(s): ACDI is seeking applicants who propose a groundbreaking initial two-year research program in one of the following priority fields: 

  1. Nature based solutions for climate change 
  2. Economics and financing of climate adaptation 
  3. Governance of interacting climate and other societal crises 
  4. Synergies in poverty, inequality and climate action 
  5. Modeling and assessment of climate risk in Africa 

Type: Postdoctoral, Fellowship

Eligibility for Carnegie Developing Emerging Academic Leaders Fellowship Program

Required 

  • A PhD granted within the previous four years, in the field of social science or natural science pertinent to the research subject the applicant wants to work within. 
  • A solid publication record, given the candidate’s career stage. 
  • Aspiration and capacity to work in an interdisciplinary research team setting. 
  • Tremendous organizational competence and capability to work under pressure and meet deadlines 
  • Skilled written and verbal communication ability in English 

Desirable 

  • Experience in facilitating multi-stakeholder processes 
  • translation of research into knowledge for policy and practice experience

Carnegie Developing Emerging Academic Leaders Fellowship Program – Selection Process:  

  • Only qualified and finalized applications will be considered by the selection committee.  
  • If you not notified in one month of the deadline, could mean your application has failed.  
  • Interviews of qualified applicants are probable to be conducted in January 2021 and the successful applicant is expected to start as soon as possible thereafter.

Benefits of Carnegie Developing Emerging Academic Leaders Fellowship Program

The worth of the fellowship award is R300,000 yearly, payable as a tax-free stipend. 

Conditions of award: 

  • Candidates may not formerly have held a full-time permanent academic post. 
  • The successful candidate will be required to register as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Cape Town and will be expected to start the required research at a jointly approved date that is preferably no later than end of 1 April 2021. 
  • The successful candidate will be expected to conform to the university’s approved policies, procedures and practices for the postdoctoral sector. 

Duration of Award: The fellowship is binding for two years, with continuation into a second year conditional on attainment of agreed outputs. 

How to Apply for Carnegie Developing Emerging Academic Leaders Fellowship Program

Candidates should submit, joined into a single PDF (i) an application letter that includes a short account of their expertise and research interests, and how these relate to the position, (ii) a CV, as well as a publication list, (iii) copies of academic transcripts and/or certificates, and (iv) email addresses of at least two references who have been directly involved in their PhD and/or previous postdoctoral research.
