ADA online Summer School 2021 Early Doctoral Program (EDP) Scholarships: The African Doctoral Academy (ADA) is honored to offer a limited number of applicants, at the beginning of their Doctoral careers, the opportunity to be present at the ADA online Summer School in from 13 January – 5 February 2021.
Application Deadline: 22nd December 2020midnight (SAST).
Study Level: candidates that are within the first 12 months of their PhD degree enrolment, across all institutions and disciplines.
Number of scholarships: 25, with 15 of those scholarships precisely for delegates from institutions that are a partner university of Stellenbosch University.

The African Doctoral Academy Scholarships at Stellenbosch University will be in a virtual format, because of the uncertainty around potential travel to and from South Africa. The Short Courses will be held online and will be a blend of live teaching, exercises, group work and learning.
Successful candidates will be able to enroll for an online course hosted during the Summer School and may choose between the preparatory course or one of the 8 week-long courses taking place between 18 and 29 January 2021, and pick an additional two one-day/one two-course in the first week of February.

Qualified applicants should be in the early stages of their PhD, can be from any field and will be enrolled at their home institution by 1 February 2021 and have been enrolled for no more than 12 months by 1 February 2021
- If applicant’s participation in the online Summer School is subject to the bursary, it is suggested that applicant wait for the result before applying to avoid duplication.
- African (including South African) students studying at institutions in Africa will be given preference.
- Some portion of the total amount of scholarships that will be granted to delegates specifically from partner universities of Stellenbosch University.
- We very much encourage and promote women to apply for the bursaries and we will take this into consideration when scoring the applications.

- Candidates have to complete the online form below to submit their information and apply to take part in the program. This comprises a 200 word motivation of how the online Summer School would profit your research and journey as a PhD applicant.
- Applicants can apply for only 1 week-long course held between 13 and 29 January and one short-from course held between 1 and 5 February
- Applicants have to upload the below documents as part of the application process. No documents will be accepted by email. Naming convention: surname.document_type.program (for example smit.curriculumvitae.edp.doc).
- Closing date for applications is 22 December 2020 at midnight, SAST.
An application will not be considered as finalized if applicant does not submit all the necessary documentation in full.

- Summary description of applicant’s research(roughly 200 words)
- A formal proof of registration at applicants’ home institution, noticeably showing their registration date for their PhD degree.
- A written approval / referee report
- On university letterhead & containing supervisor’s signature by the present (home) supervisor or head of department to endorse the candidate’s application. This will show the home supervisor’s approval for the candidate to partake in the ADA’s Summer School and provide legitimacy of candidate’s intention.
- We will give a bonus point in the course of the evaluation process if your supervisor also states your case and your suitability for the program, in addition to simply endorsing your application.
