CBA Resident Fellowship at New York Universityscholars work on projects that magnify the way we think about the history, practice, and performance of dance. There is no expectation of a finished product. CBA Fellows are heartened to ask questions and take risks. They gain colleagues they would not otherwise encounter. These engagements between artists and scholars, two communities that do not often intersect, strengthen and deepen the work of both.
CBA Resident Fellowship at New York UniversityFellows are not required to be experts in dance but must have an interest in engaging with the art form. CBA accept and embolden projects that explore many types of dance and its related arts. The fellowship provides space, a stipend, and the time to pursue rigorous work. Fellows also get new associates and a broad community of scholars and artists, two communities that do not often meet. The Resident Fellowship is the core offering for scholars and artists of all disciplines to develop projects that expand the way we think about the history, practice, and performance of dance. Past fellows have emanated from wide-ranging fields such as history, design, philosophy, visual arts, and more. Fellows are not mandated to be professionals in ballet or dance, but must have an desire to engaging with the art.
Physically, ballet is a process of training based on a linear and geometrically proportioned organization of the human body. Ballet is intelligently expansive; it has deep networks to philosophy and mathematics, to manners and religion, to painting and fashion, and to the practices of war and the ambitions of sport. At its beginnings, ballet was a western art form with backgrounds in the Renaissance. All through its history, it expressed a vision of society and civic culture, which was at first courtly and aristocratic and in the 20th century became public and democratic. In the present day, ballet is practiced world-wide and has incorporated and impacted a wide range of dance traditions and styles.

Eligibility for CBA Resident Fellowship at New York University
- Intellectual or artist pursuing an original project related to dance and/or its related arts and sciences.
- Applicants applying as scholars must have a PhD.
- Candidates have to display exceptional promise and/or have demonstrated noteworthy accomplishments in their field.
- Dance expertise is not required.
- Scholars (as of September 2020) are not qualified.
- The CBA Fellowship Program does not support:
- Project work in arts administration
- Projects fixated on the candidate’s personal memoir or autobiography
- Schemes involving giving dance lessons as part of the research plan
- Projects reviewing prior work, such as:
- editing, digitizing, or organizing archives
- editing films or book anthologies
How to Apply for CBA Resident Fellowship at New York University

- CBA expect scholars and artists to each show different strengths that are reflective of their teaching.
- Project proposals are not mandatory to involve both scholarly and artistic inquiry.
- Prosperous proposals will focus on the project’s vital research questions.

Every material must be in English and submitted via the SurveyMonkey Apply platform. There is no application fee. In certain cases and by invitation, candidates will be summoned to a virtual interview in January or February 2021 with CBA’s Assistant Director, Andrea Salvatore.
