Africa Initiative for Governance Scholarships at University of Oxford is currently open for application. Africa Initiative for Governance (AIG) calls for applications from Nigerians and Ghanaians for 2021 Masters Scholarships in the UK. To achieve their goal of being a catalyst for public sector transformation, AIG will every year, for five years starting in 2017, fund five outstanding West Africans for Africa Initiative for Governance Scholarships at University of Oxford, from all backgrounds who are passionate about the public sector, to pursue the Master of Public Policy at the Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford. After graduation, AIG Scholars will be expected to go back to their home country and apply their learning experience as change agents in their country’s public sector. The founder and principals are foremost notables from business, government and academic life. Jointly, they share a solid vision for the future of African governance and the potential of the continent and its people. Though the goals are ambitious, they believe that with the understanding and proficiency of Board of Directors and Advisors, they will eventually achieve their objectives.
Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede is the Originator and Chairman of the Africa Initiative for Governance. He is a lawyer, banker, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. Mr Aig-Imoukhuede has a law degree from the University of Benin and was called to the Bar in Nigeria. He also holds a Trium MBA, awarded jointly by the London School of Economics, New York University, and HEC Paris. He is the Chairman of Coronation Capital, previous to which he was Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Access Bank Plc, where he led the transformation of the bank to be rated amongst Africa’s leading banks.
In 2012, Mr Aig-Imoukhuede was chosen Chair of the Presidential Committee on the Verification of Fuel Subsidies. His oversight of the process is extensively credited with saving Nigeria billions of dollars in fraudulent fuel subsidy payments.

The Africa Initiative for Governance Scholarships at University of Oxford are fully funded covering fees, accommodation and living expenses, does not cover travel or visa expenses, however.
Eligibility for Africa Initiative for Governance Scholarships at University of Oxford
To be eligible for consideration for the Africa Initiative for Governance Scholarships at University of Oxford, you must:
- Be a citizen of Nigeria or Ghana
- Be within the 25 of age and 35 years of age (must not be 36 years old by December 31, 2020)
- Hold a first-class or second-class upper undergraduate degree with honors (or equivalent international qualifications), at least, in any discipline. For candidates with a degree from the USA, the least GPA sought is 3.7 out of 4.0
- It is desirable to be top 10% of graduating class (First, Second or Master’s Degree) – proof to be provided
- Make available proof of game-changing leadership and resultant impact
- Display talents and interests outside of academics (evidence to be provided)
Please note that:
- Academic merit and leadership potential are important precedencies for selection.
- In the situation of applicants with second-class upper qualifications, a Master’s, second degree or germane professional qualification will be a plus.
- Only candidates shortlisted for the following phase of the selection procedure will be communicated and any inquiries regarding individual application status are firmly prohibited.
- Applications forwarded through post or in person are NOT acceptable.
- Applicants who surface as finalists in the Africa Initiative for Governance (AIG) selection process will be expected to apply straight to the Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford, for admissions. Front-runners who are offered admission to the Master of Public Policy will be considered by the School in the final selection of AIG Scholars.
